Advice & Information
Employers and employees alike need to be knowledgeable of workplace legislation. Gone are the days of “she’ll be right mate”. We’ve put together some links to useful sites that will educate you to your rights and responsibilities.
Avoiding Discrimination
Innocent intentions, or questions, may still be discriminatory. A seemingly harmless conversation about someone’s age may result in your company facing legal issues. There is no ‘one rule fits all’ situation since companies vary, as do roles and the legislation acknowledges this.
The most effective way is to ensure that the person interviewing has intimate knowledge about the inherent requirements required for someone to succeed in the role and develops related questions. Preparing questions in advance, and asking candidates the same core questions ensures that each candidate has an equal opportunity to express their skills and experience.
If unsure, it is probably best to contact the relevant State’s anti-discriminatory commission for detailed, and specific, information.
