The role

Reporting to Kym Fraser , we currently have an exciting opportunity for a Lawyer (4-6 years PQE) to join our Public Sector practice group in Sydney on a full time basis.

This role will see you working on public law litigation matters for various clients including the Department of Home Affairs as well as others. You will manage files, draft court documents, draft advices, contact clients and make court appearances. You will also assist Kym in a range of general advisory and dispute matters whilst mentoring and supervising junior lawyers.

The work of our Public Sector team spans virtually all areas of government activity. Team members regularly act in dispute resolution and litigation (including merits review and judicial review of government decisions, tort claims and commercial disputes) as well as the provision of advice on decision making and management of legal risks, statutory interpretation, regulatory matters, the conduct of compliance and enforcement activities, and in relation to information privacy and access to information. The team also does a range of royal commissions, inquiries and inquests - it is the leading royal commission and inquiry practice in Australia having been involved in 22 royal commissions, inquiries and inquests in the last 5 years.

Key responsibilities

This busy and varied role will see you have the opportunity to:

  • Work on a broad range of high profile dispute resolution and litigation matters, as well as administrative law matters such as judicial review
  • Represent clients including government departments, higher education institutions and agencies, as well as private sector bodies
  • Develop your client relationship skills through various client secondments

Skills & experience

To be successful in this role, you will have:

  • Between 4 and 6 years PQE
  • Proven experience in commercial litigation and administrative law
  • Track record supervising junior lawyers
  • Highly developed interpersonal and communication skills; required for building client relationships and maintaining a positive team environment
  • Strong academic record of achievement
  • Proven interest in the Australian governmental and political landscape
  • Strong team work and exemplary communication skills

In addition to this, we're looking for a resilient, self-starter. Someone who is able to work autonomously and is focused on attention to detail and providing an outstanding service to their clients.
